At Coral Ark Foundation, we believe that science holds the key to the future of coral reefs. Our Research Initiative is dedicated to developing innovative, evidence-based solutions that will ensure corals not only survive but thrive in the face of climate change and human impact.
We aim to partner with universities and marine institutes to advance coral science, breeding, and resilience.
With rising ocean temperatures, acidification, and increasing pollution threatening reefs worldwide, one of our primary goals is to identify and study corals with natural resilience. By understanding which species and strains can withstand thermal stress, poor water quality, and other pressures, we can help build stronger, more adaptive reef systems for the future.
We are pioneering new methods of coral propagation and aquaculture, testing techniques that improve growth rates, survival, and scalability. From fragmentation and micro-fragmentation to novel farming systems, our aim is to make coral farming more efficient, sustainable, and accessible—providing an alternative to wild collection and a foundation for large-scale reef restoration projects.
At the heart of this initiative is our state-of-the-art research laboratory, designed in line with the latest biosecurity and aquaculture regulations. The lab is fully equipped with advanced life-support systems, filtration technology, microscopes, centrifuges, and analytical equipment to ensure research is carried out at the highest scientific standards. Strict protocols safeguard against the spread of disease, invasive species, and pathogens.
We believe knowledge should be shared and opportunities should be open. That’s why our lab is available at no cost to marine biology students, graduates, and universities who wish to pursue their research. By offering access to cutting-edge facilities, live coral systems, and expert support, we aim to empower the next generation of marine scientists to contribute directly to conservation science.
Through collaboration, innovation, and education, Coral Ark Foundation’s Research Initiative is building a knowledge base that will help restore coral reefs worldwide.
We are a registered CIO with the Charity Commission, Gift Aid and with the Fundraising Regulator.
As part of our long-term conservation strategy, Coral Ark Foundation is developing a Coral Gene Bank to safeguard the genetic diversity of coral species. By collecting, cataloguing, and preserving genetic material from a wide range of corals, we can create a living library of biodiversity that will support future restoration and research.
The gene bank will allow scientists to study coral genetics in depth, identify resilient strains, and provide a secure backup for endangered species. This resource will also support selective propagation, helping to rebuild stronger, more adaptable reefs in the face of climate change and pollution.
Through this initiative, we are ensuring that no species is lost without a trace, protecting the genetic legacy of coral reefs for future generations.
